General Skilled Migration – A summary

The Skilled Stream of Australia's migration program targets people who are highly skilled, are under 45 years of age, and who will quickly make a contribution to the Australian economy. To make a valid application, applicants or their spouses must be able to satisfy the basic requirements and then the Points System.

If you are not able to satisfy these basic requirements, you should not continue with a General Skilled Migration application.

Before you apply for a visa

You must have had your skills assessed by the relevant Australian assessing authority (as outlined on Form 1121i Skilled Occupations List), for your nominated occupation.

These assessing authorities are responsible for undertaking skills assessment for migration purposes, and are not employment agencies. They will not reply to requests for job placement, nor are they authorised to give advice on the allocation of points.

What is the Points System?

The General Skilled Migration program is based on the Points System. Points are awarded for a range of factors including skill, age, English language ability, specific work experience, occupation in demand, Australian qualifications, regional Australia. Extra points can be awarded based on spouse skills and relatives in Australia. You can find detailed calculations of points for each category on the website at www.immi..gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/points-test.htm.
