Student Visas
There are 5 different assessment levels for student applications. These assessment levels establish the threshold requirements that an applicant must meet in order to be granted a student visa. A global review of Assessment levels for Australian student visa subclasses was recently conducted. Changes to some Assessment levels will come into effect on 1 September 2008.
All student visa subclasses remain at Assessment Level 3 for Iraqi and Syrian Citizens.
As of 1 September 2008 Assessment Level changes will be implemented for some student visa subclasses for students who are Jordanian nationals:
• English Language Students (ELICOS) Subclass 570 – to Assessment Level 4
• Postgraduate Research Students Subclass 574 – to Assessment Level 2
All other student subclasses remain at Assessment Level 3 for Jordanian nationals.

Service standard: 90 days
This service standard is linked to the 2008-2009 Portfolio Budget Statement. We aim to process 75% of cases within this service standard. However, actual processing times may vary from this standard as the following notes explain:
-The service standard is indicative only. Individual cases may be decided in longer or shorter periods than the service standard depending on a range of factors, individual circumstances and the complexity of each case.
-The service standard applies to visa applications lodged with complete documentation. You can expect your application to take longer than the service standard if it was lodged without all the required documentation or information.
-Processing times vary by location, reflecting the differing circumstances of national and regional caseloads.
