Job Vacancy – Defence Section Translator/Research Officer
The Australian Embassy in Amman is seeking an energetic, pro-active and service-focussed person to work in the Embassy’s Defence Section, to commence as soon as possible.
Duties:
• Translate (Arabic/English and English/Arabic) all inwards and outwards Defence correspondence including letters, diplomatic notes, flights clearances, ship clearances and port visit requests.
• Track and manage the progress of ship and aircraft diplomatic clearances.
• Undertake defence and security research as directed by the Defence Attache.
• Prepare analytical reporting on defence and security developments in Jordan and the region that affect Australia’s interests.
• Provide interpreter services for the Defence section when required.
• Liaise with Jordan’s Armed Forces and other Embassies.
• Understudy and back up Office Manager when required.
• Driving tasks as directed by Defence Attache or Office Manager.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of Defence Section procedures.
Selection Criteria:
Essential:
1. A professional standard of written and spoken Arabic and English with the proven ability to translate complex documents and provide concise and clear verbal and written reports in both languages in a timely manner.
2. Demonstrated excellent research skills and the ability to provide analytical reporting of complex security or defence-related matters.
3. Excellent computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
4. Demonstrated ability to use initiative and work flexibly and autonomously with little supervision in an equal opportunity, multi-cultural and high-tempo workplace.
Desirable:
1. Knowledge of the Australian Defence Force and the role of a Defence Attaché.
2. Eligible for an Australian Government security clearance.
Selection will be based on an interview and a series of short exercises.
Salary will be based on skills and experience. All new staff are employed on a fixed term contract basis, and will be initially engaged for a three month probationary period.
